When you think of a makeup artist, do you think about sitting in a salon getting ready for prom? Many of us have preconceived ideas of what constitutes an artist and what environment one might see an artist work,

Well, good thing you are here. You are about to learn about the world of professional makeup artists as you have never imagined it.

Let's start out with learning what makeup artistry entails. By definition a makeup artist applies a range of cosmetics to a model or client. Did you notice the word artist? This professional does more than just paint faces. This is where the job options come in. We will explore the opportunities available for those who get their certificate to do this.

FREELANCE

First things first. You can work for yourself. Be your own boss. How does this work? You market yourself to a niche—perhaps you will only do makeup for weddings or special events. Freelancing means you are in control of your schedule, set your own prices, figure out how to network, and are independent.

RUNWAY MAKEUP ARTIST

The high fashion industry is fast paced and can be stressful. This type of job is not for everyone. You’ll need to work fast and maintain cleanliness in between the long list of models you need to prep. Having an artistic vision and ability to take instruction from the project director will be a must. These makeup looks can be bold, creative, and innovative, and fun. New York Fashion week is an example of a show you could participate in. It is imperative you stick to the look decided by the production team/director, many models have a preferred way of doing makeup and will try to tell you how to change it.

FILM/TV

You may like to do makeup for actors/actresses on set. This may require knowledge of Special FX makeup depending on the project. With this type of makeup, you will have to apply it to look natural and high definition for film. Sometimes makeup done on TV will influence upcoming trends, so being in the know is very important. Having a professional attitude during drama on set or with celebrities you work on will also determine if you’ll be rehired.

RED CARPET

If you love being involved in film makeup and can’t get enough of celebs, then red carpet events can be added to your repertoire. You must be confident in your skill as these looks will be most talked about in pop culture. If all goes well, you’ll be working with your celeb group for years to come.

THEATRE/COSTUME

Not too far behind the celebrities and tv makeup needs is the dramatic stage. Whether you are part of a Broadway production, prepping ballerinas for an ensemble, or painting children’s faces. Here your skills bring to life a specific character.

Theatre makeup is much more different than costume makeup because the actors are farther from the audience and need heavier coverage and more dramatic expressions that look horrific up closely.

MORTUARY

Yes, this sounds grim, but these artists are needed. Everyone wants to honor their loved one and find comfort when attending the funeral. The mortuary makeup artist takes great deal of care to ensure the deceased appears the way he/she always was.

RETAIL

Makeup artists can move on to sell products in stores and demo these products on inquisitive clients. Aside from that, makeup artists can become brand representatives or help develop their own products. This line of work is exciting for those who have a passion to work with chemists and testing out new items.

EDUCATORS

Close to being a brand representative is educating others on a specific brand and marketing for a company. If a makeup artist has a teaching gift then teaching at a makeup artist school is a great option. Either way, educators help pass knowledge on to the next generation of aspiring artists and share their experiences.

Do you now see the possibilities? This list is long enough but if you think of another job opportunity let us know.
